What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small, surgical grade titanium screw that is used to replace the root of the missing tooth. The implant is screwed directly into the bone, which then fuses with the surface of the implant over time. A crown, bridge or over-denture is then inserted into the implant which mimics the natural tooth or teeth. Dental implants preserve the integrity of the facial structures and reduce the inconvenience associated with tooth loss. A 3D CT scan will be performed before treatment is undertaken to assess suitability, bone volume and quality. Treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, sedation or General Anaesthetic depending on patient choice.

treatment process

Step 1:
The Initial consultation

Your dentist or oral surgeon will conduct a thorough examination to decide the best implant treatment for you. During the consultation, your dentist will examine your mouth and take X-rays to determine the condition of your teeth and jawbone. If you are a suitable candidate, your dentist will then create a personalised treatment plan for you.

step 2:
Implant placement

The second step in the dental implant process involves the placement of the implant. This is surgical procedure, carried out under local anaesthesia and sedation or general anaesthesia if requested.

step 3:
Abutment Placement

The final step in the dental implant process is the restoration. This is when your dentist will place the crown, bridge or overdenture onto the implant, completing the process. The restoration will be customised to match your existing teeth, ensuring a natural look and comfortable fit.

Dental implants have revolutionised modern dentistry, giving us endless restorative possibilities. They essentially enable you to replace missing teeth, the finished products looking and feeling very similar to natural teeth.

If you are healthy and take good care of your teeth, you’re probably a good candidate for dental implants. Your initial consultation will include discussing your overall suitability for implant treatment.

Depending on your needs and consultation with the dental implant dentist, the entire process to secure fixed replacements can take several months. The surgery for implants is relatively quick, but the implants need 3-6 months to heal before we can place permanent teeth. If you require a bone graft or sinus lift etc, treatment will naturally take longer; however, in the end, your brand-new smile will be worth it!

Dental implants usually last an average of 10-15 years, which is why they’re the best option for teeth replacements. However, if they’re placed correctly and carefully, along with being well-maintained, they can actually last much longer. This includes maintaining a great brushing and interdental cleaning routine, regular hygiene appointments, keeping up with your general health and attending regular check ups with your dentist. The crown, bridge or over-denture that the implant supports may need to be replaced over time due to normal wear and tear.

Dental implants offer one of the most effective fixed alternatives to removable dentures. If you have missing teeth, you may find that there are other things you miss too. You may miss your natural smile or not being able to eat the food you desire. Some people even experience muscle strains and discomfort as the remaining teeth shift. But it doesn’t have to be this way. The use of modern implants can be life-changing!

Have you lost one, or maybe even several, teeth? Are you self-conscious about having gaps in your smile or having to wear a denture? Our Dental Implants are a natural-looking replacement for missing teeth

Practice Partner Andy Cope originally qualified as a Dental Technician in 1991 before later retraining and graduating from Sheffield Dental School as a Dental Surgeon in 1998. Andy worked in General Practice in both Sheffield and Derby before taking over One 44 Dental Ltd with his wife Tracey in March 2015.

Andy loves all aspects of restorative and cosmetic dentistry; from crowns and bridges to composite (tooth-coloured) fillings, to making dentures and restoring dental implants.

He has also spent many years providing endodontics (root canal treatments) both in-house to his own patients and to those patients referred to him, specifically for this treatment, from other practices. He also provides facial aesthetic procedures such as dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle treatments.

Andy very much likes to take the time to build up a rapport with his patients; to know and understand their dental requirements as an individual and work together with his patients as a team. He will discuss all treatment options available to you and work with you to devise the best course of treatment individually for you. At one 44 Dental, we use the best/latest materials and equipment to provide you with first-class dental care.

Outside of Dentistry Andy enjoys making lots of fun memories with his children and has recently started running.
