what is guided biofilm therapy?
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a scientifically proven, Swiss innovation, that allows us to transform the patient experience by exchanging traditional teeth cleaning methods for a revolutionary system of dental biofilm removal, using state of the art AIRFLOW ®, PERIOFLOW® and PIEZON® technologies.
GBT consists of treatment protocols based on individual patient diagnosis and risk assessment in order to achieve optimal results. The treatment is given in the least invasive way, with the highest level of comfort, safety and efficacy.
GBT is carried out during regular cleanings and uses Airflow® technology which is a combination of warm water, air and soft powder, to remove all bacteria (biofilm) in the mouth that contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.

What to expect during your GBT visit
1. assessment
Identify need for treatment and assess any areas of concern.
2. Disclose
Make the biofilm visible by applying a special dye to the teeth using a cotton pellet. This will:
- Highlight the disclosed biofilm and any areas that are difficult for you to clean so that we can tailor an oral health home care plan specifically for you.
- The colour will guide the clinician in biofilm removal
3. Oral Hygiene Education
In this step, if needed, we will tailor a home cleaning program specifically for your mouth to help you clean any areas that are difficult for you to access. Or we can give you help, tips and advice on home care.
4. Airflow
Remove biofilm, stains and early calculus (tartar) using a mixture of water, air and a specially formulated powder to polish and clean teeth. This will:
- Remove biofilm above and below the gumline.
- Remove surface stains from the teeth.
- Removes biofilm from the gums, tongue and palate.
5. Perioflow®
If needed we can use the Airflow® system to remove biofilm in deeper gum pockets using a flexible plastic tip device known as Perioflow®. This allows us to gently access deeper areas to remove hard to reach biofilm.
6. Piezon
Gently and painlessly targets and removes remaining hard calculus (tartar) from the teeth.
7. Check
- A final check will be made for any remaining biofilm.
- Ensure calculus is fully removed.
- Accurately diagnose any decay.
8. Recall
Finally we will schedule a follow up appointment at a time frame specific for your individual needs and care.
